West Brom’s outgoing sporting and technical director Dan Ashworth believes Yassine El Ghanassy is set to shine at the West Midlands outfit.
Albion fans have seen little of the 22 year old signed on loan from Gent with a view to a permanent deal at the end of last season.
However, Ashworth spoke about how he tracked the player for the club for a number of months and is confident the starlet will still make his mark.
He revealed how the club were so close to signing the Belgian under Roy Hodgson in the January transfer window but Genk pulled out at the last minute.
Ashworth did go on to tell the Express and star about El Ghanassy saying “Yassine is a young, exciting winger who no one has seen yet. He will take a few months to settle.
“I remember going to see him. He was sub when it was 0-0. When he came on the whole crowd got forward, on the edge of their seat.”
The club’s sporting and technical director still files reports on several potential targets for the club and they will be retained for current boss Steve Clarke when he leaves for the FA.
He went on to mention that Steve Clarke will be perfect for nurturing young players and believes the Baggies have picked the right successor for Roy Hodgson.
Talking about the decision to choose the current boss, he stated, “It was the breadth of people he’d worked with, the players he’d worked with, the breadth of systems he’d worked under and the fact he had a reputation as an outstanding coach.”
Clarke will be further looking to develop his reputation as a manager, at St James’s Park, against Newcastle on the weekend.
