Brendan Rodgers has overseen a significant turnaround in Celtic’s fortunes in recent weeks, quashing the majority of debate regarding Steven Gerrard’s credentials to mastermind a successful Rangers title bid.
It’s certainly too easy in the season to write Rangers off, but their lack of conviction and failure to consistently produce positive results hint that Gerrard will need at least one full season at the helm before he can dream of bridging the gulf in class.
Gerrard turned towards Liverpool to bolster his squad in pre-season, with the likes of Jon Flanagan, Ryan Kent and Ovie Ejaria making the switch to Ibrox.
However, he didn’t manage to clinch a deal for one of the brightest products of the academy system, namely Ben Woodburn, but a recent report from Goal suggests that a future deal could yet be in the offing.
The report claims that Liverpool will consider recalling the Wales international from his loan spell at Sheffield United following his underwhelming opening to life at Bramall Lane.
The natural reflex would be to question whether Gerrard would be interested in offering Woodburn an opportunity in the SPFL if he ultimately returns to Anfield, but there is reason to suggest that Celtic should be in the hunt for his signature.
Scott Sinclair has blossomed into a devastating attacker in Scottish football, and his performances stimulated the creation of one of the Bhoys’ most iconic anthems in recent times which can be regularly heard on the terraces at Celtic Park, but his form has dwindled in recent months.
The spark which invigorated his career and made him a fan-favourite seems to have gone missing, and there is a suggestion that Rodgers could benefit from an extra option in his position.
With that in mind, Woodburn’s likely availability will provide him with a perfect opportunity to sign one of the most promising teenagers in the Premier League.
Sure, his struggle at Sheffield United represents a notable concern, but at 18-year-old he can be forgiven for struggling in a highly competitive and physical division.
A right-footed talent who likes to operate on the left-wing or as a number, Woodburn represents an ideal alternative to Sinclair, and he possesses the potential to develop into a far superior footballers in the years to come.
Blessed with speed, creativity and exceptional technique, the signing of Woodburn would be a perfect way for Rodgers to secure an upgrade on Sinclair while simultaneously getting one over Gerrard.
